Jeannie Uluru

Jeannie Uluru Reid was a Yankunytjatjara person and speaker, and a traditional owner. Her mother, Daisy Uluru, was the sister of Uluru, whose name was given to Uluru/Ayers Rock.

Jeannie was born around 1957 in the bush at Evelyn Downs. At that time, it was common for people from the Rock to move south to escape oppression. Daisy and Jeannie later traveled further south to Port Augusta.

From the age of 11, Jeannie’s mother regularly took her back to Uluru to reconnect with family who had returned to reclaim and maintain their Country. They camped beneath Uluru, near what is now the sunset viewing area. Through these visits, Jeannie formed strong cultural connections, learning the Yankunytjatjara language, art forms, and important songlines, the performance of which defined ownership of Country.

Jeannie later married Kokatha custodian Richard (Ningel) Reid. She had one daughter and two sons.
