Isaiah Nagurrgurrba
Australian Aboriginal artist Isaiah Nagurrgurrba was a screen printer who had worked with Injalak Arts since 1989. He was an important member of the Gunbalanya community and was actively involved in its ceremonial life and traditional culture.
Isaiah’s Country was Marlkawa, south-east of Oenpelli, and his major Djang (Dreaming) story was Yawk Yawk, or female water spirits — mythological beings often compared to mermaids. His sense of humour and distinctive style were evident in his work.
Isaiah had been commissioned to design artwork for tour buses in Australia and Germany and was licensed as a Yijan artist to produce designs for items such as placemats, coasters, and clothing. His work had been exhibited in Perth and Darwin, and he was a finalist in the 1998 Telstra Aboriginal Art Awards at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory.
