IS CHILD LABOUR USED WHEN MAKING THE RUGS?
No child labour is used in any part of our supply chains. Children are often advantaged in the artisanal communities, not only by the income received, but because the handicrafts often allow parents to work from homes where child care is not needed. We don’t think child care is bad, but having family around all the time strengthens communities and creates a fulfilling lifestyle, plus it is a significant expense saved.
ARE THE ARTISANS PAID WELL?
Most of the artisanal groups with are unionized and determine standardized pricing and practices and influence business outcomes through this process. We don’t determine the prices, the artisans do. They are empowered to determine their working conditions and financial returns. There are no gender differences either. The same work receives the same payment regardless of gender. We don’t negotiate prices downward, if a product is not viable we change to something else or we make changes that make it viable. If the artisans put the price up we either absorb the costs or put our prices up to keep the product viable for us.
ARE YOUR PRODUCTS FAIR TRADE
Better World Arts is endorsed by the Fair Traders of Australia and New Zealand. This means our company has been assessed for our performance against the ten principals of fair trade. This doesn’t mean all of our products are made by Fair Trade endorsed producers. There are a number of reasons for this. It is quite costly for artisans to get Fair trade accreditation that is of interest to a low number of buyers. When we have worked with Fair Trade accredited producers we have had a lot of unmanagable quality control issues that were very hard to resolve, due to the structure of the organisations. We work with the top tier of artisans in any given venture, these are not the same people that work with Fair Trade organisations which are typically operating under an NGO structure. Every supplier we work with is Sedex certified, which is a very similar process and more widely accepted by international buyers. They are usually family owned businesses. Our supplier in Kashmir is the only Sedex certified supplier in Kashmir. You can find out more about Sedex here https://www.sedex.com/
You can find out more about Fair Trad at About Us/Fair Trade. We are confident in saying none of our suppliers are unfair traders.
HOW MANY COMMUNITIES BENEFIT?
For any product in our range there are a minimum of two communities that benefit. Aboriginal communities (often but not always from remote areas) benefit financially and culturally. Better World Arts has made payments directly to artists and art centres that now totals in the millions of dollars. This money goes directly into artists’ pockets. Better World Arts continues to build upon these cultural skills and turn these into cash payments that are regular and sustained.
Handicraft communities also benefit economically and culturally. Again, these villages are usually remote and opportunities to earn cash are limited. Artisans are employed in rural tasks that are seasonal and vulnerable to good and bad weather cycles, pests and other problems that all farmers face. A strong handicraft industry alleviates the peaks and troughs in work load and cash returns, and provides income insurance for families. The handicrafts themselves are unique to particular regions.
WE WANT TO BUY SOMETHING FROM AUSTRALIA, WHY ARE YOUR PRODUCTS MADE IN PLACES LIKE KASHMIR?
The artisanal works we create benefit two communities, the Aboriginal artists’ communities and the artisans’ communities. The artists have the opportunity to make an income from royalties generated from the sale of artisanal goods, usually earning more than from the original sale of the painting. Both communities have intellectual property rights within each product. The artists have IP rights to their images and the artisans have IP rights to their regional crafts. Both communities have a steady income from these projects. We value the input from both sides equally. Nothing we are doing is diminishing the artists (or the artisans for that matter) from generating incomes in any other way they want to. The intellectual property from each community is of equal value and the image and story associated with the image is 100% Aboriginal Australian.
WHY DON’T YOU TEACH ABORIGINAL PEOPLE TO MAKE THE SAME THINGS?
We don’t know how to make the items we sell, the artisans have this knowlege. Aboriginal people are interested in their own cultural activities, not so much that of other ethnic groups. We are also very interested in protecting Intellectual Property (IP) and the handicrafts we work with are the IP of the communities and geographic locations they come from. We offer artists the opportunity to leverage the original artworks they create and generate a passive income over a long period of time. Although we make an effort to keep introducing new art and products into our range, we have many designs that have been creating income for artist for over fifteen years.
HOW DO THE ARTISTS BENEFIT FROM THE SALE OF THESE GOODS?
Artists get paid royalties when their designs are used. We pay generous royalties at the beginning of each month, and do not know of any other company that pays more than us. The income stream that royalties provide to artists is significant and sustained. Artists can receive an income over many years, value adding to the original painting. It is normal for a design used to pay out many times the cash received for the original painting. When an artist passes away the royalties are then paid to next of kin which usually consists of a group of people. You can find out more about royalties and how they work under About Us/How Royalties Work.
HOW MUCH ARE THE ROYALTIES?
Royalties are calculated on the sales of goods bearing the licensed image. We have contracts with the individual artists relating to each image we use. The rpyalties are calculated at the end of each month, after all sales have been entered and data is consolidated. The artists’ sales data is detailed and exact. We don’t divulge the percentage we use becuase the contracts are confidential, like all contracts.
