HAILSTORM DREAMING
This piece tells the story of Yilpi’s grandfather and the hailstorm that caused his death. As a young man, he was stubborn and did not heed the elders’ warning that a big storm was coming. He went out hunting before the storm and also intended to perform a ceremonial dance to ward it off. He took the ceremonial dancing sticks but never returned.

The rest of the clan hid in caves to wait out the storm. Afterwards, the women searched for the young man but could not find him. In another part of the country, children were gathering bush foods and swimming in newly filled rockholes when, by chance, they came upon his body. He had died during the storm.

This story is told to children to teach them the importance of listening to their elders.
