Steven Jupurrurla Nelson

Steven Jupurrurla Nelson was born on 30 August 1978 in Alice Springs, NT. He is a lifelong resident of Yuendumu, a remote Aboriginal community 300 km northwest of Alice Springs. He was raised by his late mother, Nora Nungarrayi Jurrah, and stepfather Frankie Jakamarra Nelson. His father, John Jampijjinpa Brown, was from Papunya. Steven has two siblings from the same mother but different father: his brother Greg Jupurrurla Wood, a ranger in Uluru, and Roslyn Napurrurla Gibson (deceased).

Steven began painting at Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation in late 2014, typically depicting ‘janganpa Jukurrpa’ (brush-tail possum Dreaming) from his mother’s country near Nyirrpi. His family’s country also includes the Nginyirrpalangu outstation.

When not painting, Steven enjoys walking with his dog Xena, relaxing at home, and hunting kangaroos.
