Willie Wilson

Willie Ngungutjara Wilson was born around 1950 near Pipalyatjara in Western Australia. His father’s country was Pipalyatjara and his Dreaming was Marlu (Kangaroo). Willie’s father had six children, three from each of his two wives. His mother’s country was Arryunga/Umutu. Willie was married and had five grown children.

He was a skilled bushman and worked as a cattleman in his younger years. Raised in the traditional way, he learned to hunt, find water sources, and gather bush foods. His paintings reflected his deep traditional knowledge and love of Tjukurpa stories, illustrating aspects of his country, including waterholes and the powerful Wanampi (mythical serpents).

Willie’s paintings were strong in both imagery and storytelling. He was a vibrant personality and was always present in the studio during extended stays in Adelaide. Immensely talented, he was greatly missed by everyone at Better World Arts.
