KALIMPINPA – DAMIEN’S COUNTRY
This piece is Damien’s depiction of the sandhills, rocky outcrops, and rockholes around his home country, Mount Liebig. Running through the middle of the painting is a dry riverbed.
Kalimpinpa is a large rockhole considered sacred in this area. It is very deep and runs underground. Traditionally, men form a line down into the rockhole to pass buckets of water along the line. The land surrounding it is represented in a highly abstract style, capturing the essence of Damien’s Country.
