From a distance, the wind blows across the sand, making the hills appear to move and change shape. The wind forms ripples, undulations, and ridges in the sand — the same shapes and patterns represented in this painting.
These sandhills are a common sight around Papunya, with some so large they can only be crossed on foot. Between the sandhills lie dry claypans and rockholes, marking the natural landscape of Damien’s Country.
